Mount Pleasant Primary School

Science

Curriculum Subject Lead - Mrs A Clarke

At Mount Pleasant, our science curriculum is designed to cultivate inquisitiveness, curiosity, and respect for the world around us. Alongside these principles, we integrate our school values of reliance, relationship, and positivity into our science expectations for primary school students.

We encourage students to develop a sense of reliance on their own abilities to inquire, explore, and discover. Through hands-on experimentation and inquiry-based learning, students learn to trust in their own problem-solving skills and abilities to navigate scientific concepts.

Our science curriculum encourages students to explore the relationships between living and non-living entities, ecosystems, and natural phenomena. By understanding these relationships, students develop a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the world around them.

We instil a positive attitude towards science by fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Students are encouraged to approach scientific challenges with enthusiasm, resilience, and an open mind. We celebrate curiosity, experimentation, and learning from both success and failure.

By integrating these values into our science curriculum, we aim to empower students to become lifelong learners with a deep appreciation for the wonders of science and the natural world.

Science at Mount Pleasant

National Curriculum

The 2014 national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this.
